Okinawa's cosmos fields are at their best in winter. It is generally said that the best conditions for cosmos to bloom are around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius and the days get shorter in autumn. However, as you all know, the temperature in Okinawa is hot and the winter on the main island is the autumn in Okinawa, so cosmos start blooming in Okinawa from the end of January. In Okinawa, cosmos often bloom in rice fields. In order to produce good rice, cosmos is planted in the rice fields, and after the best time to see them, it is necessary to crush them and plow them. Similarly, sunflower seeds are sown in autumn to be used as green manure, and they bloom in winter.

The Haneji Cosmos Field in Nago City in the northern part of Okinawa Prefecture is the most famous cosmos field in Okinawa, with 10 million flowers in full bloom. The best time to see it is in January, when red, pink, and white cosmos spread all over the place.

When the cosmos are in full bloom, the "Haneji Cosmos Festival" is held, where local specialties such as "Haneji rice," sweet sake, and handmade goods are sold.

Take bus number 111 from "Domestic Passenger Terminal" (terminus, for international flights) and get off at "Nago Bus Terminal" (ride time: 1 hour 48 minutes). Then, change to bus number 72 from "Nago Bus Terminal" (for Nago) and get off at "Oyagawa Iriguchi" (ride time: 19 minutes). After getting off, walk for 10 minutes (total time: 2 hours 30 minutes).

Access by car: Head north from the airport, turn left at Wakahasi IC, and head north on National Route 58 (travel time: 1.5 hours)

Cosmos Fields in Igei (Kunigami District)

The Igei Cosmos Fields were started by the residents of Igei Ward in a rice field of about 20,500 square meters, and are at their best in mid-February. The Igei Ward Cosmos Festival is held every year in late February when the flowers are at their best. On the day of the festival, you can enter the rice field and pick up to 20 cosmos stalks, and delicious local agricultural products are also sold around the rice fields.

・Access from Naha Airport to the cosmos fields in Igei by public transport: Take bus number 117 from "Domestic Passenger Terminal" (terminus, international flights) and get off at "Ishikawa IC" (ride time: 59 minutes). Then, change to bus number 22 from "Ishikawa Telephone Bureau" (Akazaki-bound) and get off at "Igei" (ride time: 12 minutes). After getting off, walk for 4 minutes (total time: 1 hour 38 minutes)

Access by car: Head north, turn left at Wakahasi IC and enter Prefectural Route 82. Then enter the Okinawa Expressway and head north for 28km onto National Route 329. (Approximate travel time: 55 minutes)

Yomitan Village Cosmos Field (Yomitan Village)

The Yomitan Cosmos Field is located right next to Yomitan Junior High School in Zakimi, Yomitan Village. The best time to see the flowers is from late January to late February, so we recommend going to see them a little earlier than usual. Access by car: Head southeast on National Route 332, pass National Route 331 and head towards National Route 506. Enter National Route 529 and turn right (approximate travel time: 30 minutes).

Sunflower fields in Kitanakagusuku

The sunflower fields of Kitanakagusuku Village are said to be the earliest in Japan to bloom. 200,000 sunflowers bloom in a site of about 22,000 square meters. In addition, the "Earliest Sunflower Festival in Japan" event is held every year from late February to mid-March. Shiosai Park and the market are also located near the venue, so we recommend stopping by there as well.

Glowing sunflower field

The illuminated sunflower fields have become a popular spot in Okinawa in recent years. The flower farming team SUNSET FARM OKINAWA from Yomitan Village, located on the west coast of Okinawa Prefecture, created the light decorations for their Instagram followers. The 1 hectare (3,000 tsubo) space, filled with 1,000 LED bulbs and tens of thousands of sunflowers in full bloom, is an exciting place that makes you want to return. SUNSET FARM is a farm that cultivates illuminated chrysanthemums, and boasts one of the highest production volumes in Okinawa. Nakijin Castle Sakura Festival

The Nakijin Castle Ruins, a World Heritage Site, holds a cherry blossom festival every year from late January to early February. It's a festival worth seeing at least once, with plenty of fantastical effects, such as lighting up the castle walls after sunset and illuminating the rows of Kanhizakura cherry trees along the approach to the castle from Heiromon Gate with LED lights, creating a magical atmosphere. Nago Cherry Blossom Festival

The Nago Cherry Blossom Festival is said to be the largest cherry blossom viewing spot in the prefecture, with the vividly blooming Kanhizakura cherry blossoms stretching for 2km. It is held at Nago Central Park and Nago Crossroads, and you can be moved by the spectacular cherry blossom scenery just by walking along the promenade. There is an observation deck on the hill in Nago Central Park, where you can enjoy the magnificent view of Nago city and the sparkling emerald green East China Sea.
