Beautiful Spring Event in Izu's Inatori Onsen
The scenic Inatori Onsen town in Izu is hosting its annual Hanging Hina Doll Festival from January 20 to March 31, 2025.
This enchanting annual event is rooted in Japan's rich cultural heritage and celebrates the cherished Hina Doll Festival tradition, where beautifully handcrafted decorations are displayed across the region.
With various venues hosting spectacular displays, live demonstrations, and cultural activities, attendees have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty and significance of this time-honored tradition.
Event Highlights
Gorgeous Displays
Visitors can look forward to magnificent displays of hanging Hina doll decorations, which feature delicate, handmade dolls intricately arranged to symbolize the Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival).
While regular Hina dolls can be seen all around Japan, the hanging Hina dolls are specific to only three regions in Japan: Inatori Onsen, Yanagawa in Fukuoka, and Sakata in Yamagata.
Among the highlights is Japan's largest 118-step Hina doll display located at Susanoo Shrine Held from February 15 to March 9. This striking arrangement includes a wide variety of dolls, showcasing regional artisans’ craftsmanship and imagination.
The display is not only a visual spectacle but also serves as a tribute to the dedication of those who keep this tradition alive.
Cultural Significance
The tradition of Hina Tsurushi involves hanging handmade dolls on both sides of Hina displays during the celebration of Hina Matsuri, which is held in early March.
This practice reflects the hopes and wishes of mothers for their daughters' health and happiness, encapsulating a deep cultural significance that emphasizes family bonds and the importance of nurturing relationships.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with this heartwarming custom, gaining insight into the historical and cultural roots of the festival.
Multiple Venues
The festival will be held across several venues, including the Cultural Park Hina Hall, which charges an admission fee of 500 yen.
Naburatoto, another key exhibition site, will charge an admission fee of 100 yen, while entry to Futatsubori Farm and Hachiman Shrine will be free.
Visitors are welcome to explore the enchanting displays from 9:00 - 17:00 daily.
Notably, Naburatoto will have extended hours during weekends and daily openings from February 15 to March 9, allowing more opportunities for guests to experience the vibrant decorations.
Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival
Additionally, the festival coincides with the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival held in the neighboring town of Kawazu, featuring the famous Kawazu cherry blossoms known for their early bloom. This celebration will take place from February 1 to February 28, offering visitors a dual experience of cultural and natural beauty.
As the festival approaches, locals and tourists alike are encouraged to participate in this unique cultural celebration, celebrating the beauty of Japanese traditions. For more information on the festival and related events, please visit the Inatori Onsen official website.
