The Kawasuso Festival is one of the three major festivals of Tajima, held every year in mid-July in the Hamasaka area of Shin-onsen Town. The Kawasuso Festival is held on the sandy beach at the mouth of the Kishida River, so it is said that the "Kawaro" in the festival meant "the foot of the river." It has a long history dating back to the mid-Edo period, and this year it will be held from July 19th to 21st.
The centerpiece of the festival is the dedication of the "Kirinjishi," a nationally designated important intangible folk cultural asset, and the "Togyogyoretsu," a parade of portable shrines and floats through the town. The Kirinjishi goes around houses, dancing gracefully to pray for the safety of the household.
First day (Yoimiya): Mobile floats parade through the town, and various performances are shown.
・Day 2 (Main Festival): A procession and a Kirin Lion Dance offering are held at the Otabisho shrine set up at Hamasaka Prefectural Sun Beach. The festival reaches its climax at night with the Hamasaka Hometown Summer Festival Fireworks Display, which features around 3,000 fireworks.
- Third day (Kangosai): After rituals such as the Okama Purification and the Urayasu Dance, the mikoshi returns to Utsuno Shrine, and the series of events comes to an end.
It is said that summer in the Hamasaka area begins with this lively "Kawashita Festival."

A divine dance that brings good fortune | The charm of Kirinjishimai
![[Held in 2025] A summer tradition! Kawashita Festival in Hyogo, Hyogo | Access, fireworks, and highlights](https://resources.matcha-jp.com/resize/720x2000/2025/07/03-238043.webp)
Appearance: The lion's head is long and golden (with some exceptions). It has one horn and ears that stand upright. The body is red (with some exceptions), the back is black, and even the tail is black and stands upright.
Its origins lie in the ancient lion dance that has been passed down in Inaba Province (present-day eastern Tottori Prefecture).
Ikeda light was the great-grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and he changed the lion to the sacred animal kirin and the clown to a shōjō as symbols of the Tokugawa family's authority.
The Kirin Lion Dance is said to be a messenger of the gods that drives away evil spirits and brings good fortune, and is deeply loved by local residents.
There is a custom of having the Kirin-shishi lion bite one's head in the hope that children will be clever and adults will be healthy.

At the Kawashita Festival, you can watch the portable shrine procession of Utsuno Shrine and the local Kirin Lion Dance up close. At night, you can enjoy fireworks and delicious food from the food stalls. It is a summer festival where you can enjoy traditional Japanese culture with all five senses. Why not come and experience this year's Kawashita Festival and feel the atmosphere of a Japanese summer?
We are a voluntary tourism organization that promotes the attractions of the northern part of Kinki, including Tamba, Tajima, Tango, and Wakasa. The flavors of Northern Kinki are not limited to crab, a representative winter sea delicacy, but also include oysters, yellowtail, and pufferfish, as well as cockles, rock oysters, and white squid in the summer, and mountain flavors such as Tamba chestnuts, Tamba black beans, and the summer fruit, sand dune melon. This is an area where you can enjoy gourmet food all year round. I would be delighted to visit the vast northern Kinki region many times and provide information on railway journeys.
