Maizuru Red Brick Park

Maizuru's Red Brick Warehouses were constructed between 1901 (Meiji 34) and 1921 (Taisho 10) after the former Imperial Japanese Navy opened its naval base. These warehouses were used to store weapons and ammunition, and eight of the 12 remaining Red Brick Warehouses in the Kitasui district have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, and along with other former naval facilities, they have been designated as Japan Heritage Sites by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
In order to preserve the value of this historical building for future generations, efforts have been underway since the 1990s to preserve and utilize it, and in 2012 it was fully reopened as the tourist exchange facility "Maizuru Red Brick Park," making it one of the leading tourist spots in northern Kinki.
How to get to Red Brick Park
The park is about a 20-minute walk from JR Higashi-Maizuru Station. There are several routes, including one that takes you through the shopping district in front of the station, and another that goes through the retro brick Kitasui Tunnel, allowing you to enjoy the city of Higashi-Maizuru along the way. There is also a large parking lot (for 500 cars) adjacent to the park, and a bus stop for a route bus that runs between the stations in about an hour, so public transportation is also available.

The only red brick museum in the world

Maizuru's Red Brick Warehouse was promoted for preservation and utilization through the activities of a citizens' group promoting urban development, and renovation work began in earnest in the 1990s. One of its icons, the Red Brick Museum, was renovated from Red Brick Warehouse No. 1. It is a unique museum that collects and exhibits bricks from around the world.

The Municipal Memorial Hall, which was renovated from Building No. 2 next to City Hall, is a place for art and culture exchange with a multipurpose hall and exhibition room. There is also a cafe serving gourmet food and sweets inspired by the former navy, such as "Navy Curry," and it is bustling with local residents and tourists. Building No. 3 also houses a souvenir shop selling special products from the Maizuru and Wakasa regions. Many visitors come to enjoy a fulfilling time during events and on holidays.
Building 5 Event Space
The largest warehouse facing the national highway, Building 5, is home to the Kyoto Maizuru Brewery, a beer brewing facility where you can enjoy craft beer.

Lawn Square
The long-awaited "Sakana Terrace" has opened on the park's lawn plaza, offering gourmet seafood. Established by a fishmonger from Maizuru Port, the store sells seafood bowls, sushi, and prepared dishes made with local fish, and is popular with tourists and local residents alike.
Various food trucks sometimes come to the square.

atick (commercial complex)

In September 2024, a facility that could be considered the culmination of the project will be completed on the hill adjacent to the park. "Atick" will combine tourism and apparel. It is a commercial complex that will include clothing and outdoor shops, the first "BEAMS JAPAN" in northern Kinki, a cafe, an observation deck, a sauna, a dog run, and more.
The apparel shop offers men's and women's clothing and miscellaneous goods carefully selected by Woody House buyers, as well as a store for the company's original brand "SOLAMONAT," which is made by a sewing company in Maizuru. The outdoor store offers a wide selection of high-performance, high-design clothing, bags, shoes, and goods from brands such as "THE NORTH FACE" and "Patagonia."

The Kyoto by the Sea area is about 99 km from Kyoto city, and can be reached in as little as 90 minutes by car or bus. It is close by and offers another side to Kyoto, with a different atmosphere from the city. Once upon a time, there was an ancient nation (Taniha no Kuni) with an advanced culture that was introduced from the continent, and it was also the secret stage of the creation of Japan. The Kyoto by the Sea area is filled with evidence of its origin, such as the legend of the descent of Toyouke-no-Okami, the oldest god of food, the demon legend of Mt. Oe, and the legend of the Dragon Palace. It is filled with the charms of Japan scattered throughout each era, such as Amanohashidate, which was the source of Kyoto culture that fascinates the world and was longed for by the people of the capital during the Heian and Muromachi periods, the Tango Chirimen Corridor woven with silk that has been spun for 300 years, the modern industrial heritage sites of Maizuru and Ayabe, the one-of-a-kind Ine Funaya landscape born from the work of fishermen, and Fukuchiyama Castle, which conveys the Warring States period to the present day. Furthermore, "Kyoto of the Sea" is a land of abundance, blessed with ingredients beloved by the god of food, such as seafood like Matsuba crab and Ine yellowtail, and rice and vegetables grown in pure water. Furthermore, its natural scenery, including the San'in Coast, a Global Geopark, and the mountains and rivers where gods, Buddhas and even demons reside, pique the curiosity of travelers, whose beauty will soothe their souls. It is a region where the culture of "valuing harmony" has lived on since ancient times, and where kind people are gracious and accommodating to travelers when they encounter it. Everything you taste and encounter here is connected to Japan's roots. This is Kyoto of the Sea, the source of Japan that lives in the heavens, earth, mountains and seas.
