An Inn Converted from a Private House

Suehiro House is located in Furukawa-cho, a town where old houses line the streets.

The vestibule is set back from the street, so passersby may not be aware of it. Suehiro House blends perfectly into the townscape, as this inn was converted from a private house.

The whole house is used as an inn, and the rate is 50,000 yen (including tax) for two nights, with an additional 1000 yen futon fee per person. Up to eight people can stay at the same time, but two to six people may be the optimum number of guests.

Three rooms can be used as guestrooms. They are all typical Japanese rooms with tatami mats, and guests will be asked to set their futons out by themselves.

Treasure Hunting in the Inn

Please take a close look at the furniture and decor. They are all the handiwork of the Hida carpenters, and have a charming warmth to them.

A bird-shaped catch was designed for the sliding door of the closet. There are many places in the Suehiro House where the guests can appreciate the carpenter's creativity, so they can also enjoy a treasure hunt in this inn.

Open the closet on the first floor, and a heavy black safe appears. This was used by the former owner of the house, who left it behind.

Even the present owner cannot open this safe, and according to the staff, if the guests can open it, whatever left inside is theirs. So if you happen to stay at this inn, please give it a try.

Enjoying Local Life

This inn was originally a private house, so the guests can also experience the daily life of Hida Furukawa while staying here.

The photograph above shows the bathroom with its distinctive Japanese cypress interior. A fragrant scent fills the bathroom when the bathtub is full.

The kitchen is furnished with cooking utensils and seasonings, but you will have to do your own grocery shopping and cooking. There is even a sukiyaki pan, so the guests can make sukiyaki with Hida beef. A supermarket and liquor shop frequented by the local residents is located nearby, so making some regional dishes here is also possible.

The Suehiro House can also be used as an office. There is a meeting room on the second floor, with a printer and a whiteboard.

Walking Around Hida Furukawa

Hida Furukawa is a just the right size for a sightseeing area. Suehiro House guests can easily enjoy the whole town on foot.

Guests should try a walk dressed in kimono. Kimono Oobora, a local kimono shop, offers rental kimono and a dressing service ass well.

The kimono blends perfectly into the old townscape of Hida Furukawa. Wearing one as you sightsee is sure to make the memories of your trip even more vivid.

Hida Takayama, another tourist site is located only a 10 minute walk from Hida Furukawa Station, making this town an ideal base for sightseeing in the Hida area. Incidentally, the animation movie "Your Name" was set in Hida Furukawa. Various spots including the station appear in the movie, so fans can enjoy a pilgrimage tour of the town as well.

The appeals of Furukawa-cho lies in the local land, and the time flow in the area, rather than a particular spot. So take a walk, relax at the inn, or chat with the local residents and experience things that are different from your everyday life.

Two nights is the minimum for a reservation at Suehiro House. This number was set so that the guests can fully enjoy the town.

A Heads-Up about Hida

Most of the stores in Hida Furukawa, with the exception of taverns, close in the early evening hours (there is a convenience store that is open 24 hours in the nearby area.) Those who want to enjoy local products and liquor should go shopping in the daytime.

Although the local residents may seem shy, once you get to know them, they are kind and friendly. When you meet people during your stay, be sure to exchange greetings.
