Rice Crackers - Find Your Favorite Type Of Senbei!
To Japanese people, senbei (rice crackers) are a familiar snack. Did you know that there are various types of senbei? With the cooperation of Kameda Seika Co, Ltd, we compared the features of various types of senbei crackers in this article.
3. Agebeika (Fried Rice Crackers)
Agebeika (fried rice crackers) are senbei that have been fried with oil. Ageichiban is most popular and main agebeika product of Kameda Seika.
The sensation of eating the snack and making a crunchy sound as you eat it is part of the popularity. In spite of being crisply fried, you can also taste the rich flavor of this product.
The product that we had them try was the limited edition corn flavored Ageichiban. When they actually sampled it, they said, “It’s similar to popcorn!”which, when we heard it, we realized was probably true. The German tourists commented, “I’d like to have it with beer!”
After the interview, we tried having the senbei together with beer. When we did, it tasted even more delicious than usual because of its great compatibility. If there is anyone that is curious about this combination, definitely please try it for yourself.
4. Kameda’s Kakinotane
Kameda’s Kakinotane is senbei made from rice flour that is steamed, kneaded into a paste, then flavored with a secret soy sauce-based sauce. It is a snack that can be regularly eaten as is and is also common as a snack eaten with alcoholic beverages.
There are various makers that product Kakinotane products, but the first company to create a product with peanuts is Kameda Seika. This snack became an essential side dish to beer thanks to the mixture of these mini senbei with roasted peanuts.
Lately, there have also been releases of the product that go well with coffee or wine in order to target light snackers too. It is a product that is loved regardless of gender or generation. Kameda’s Kakinotane is one of the senbei types that is eaten the most commonly in Japan. How will our international taste-testers take it?
The answer was “A flavor I’ve never eaten before. I don’t hate it, but it might not be something I’m very familiar with.” This may be a great product to try for those that like challenging themselves to try out new flavors.
Where Can They Be Purchased?
Although it varies depending on the type of senbei and product, you can typically find senbei at supermarkets and convenience stores throughout Japan.
Some products, such as Kameda’s Kakinotane, soft senbei, and more, are found in duty-free shops in each airport including Narita Airport. As such, please use this as reference if you would like to buy them as souvenirs or would like to try them out during your trip.

Senbei has been an indispensable snack for Japanese households since long ago. During the period of food shortages after World War II, Kameda Seika was established with the idea that “(we) would like to deliver joy and warmth into daily lives.” Even now, this is expressed in the products made by Kameda Seika.
With the understanding of the feeling of “wanting to share a deliciousness (happiness) with family and friends,” there are also products that come with two pieces of senbei even in separate packaging. The manufacturers would like you to eat them together with someone; one for yourself and one for either your family or friends. These wishes have been the driving force behind Kameda Seika's senbei production.
Why not try and experience that Japanese way of thinking through senbei?
