SOU・SOU’s most recent collaboration with Le Coq Sportif is an inspired one, and seems like an absolutely perfect match.

Le Coq Sportif is one of the world’s longest running sportswear brands, and they have long been associated with cycling and the Tour De France. Kyoto also has a longstanding connection with cycling, and anyone visiting the city will see immediately just how important a mode of transport bicycles are in Kyoto.

This new range is perfect for cycling enthusiasts, as well as for use as general activewear! Clothing from this line specifically uses materials and designs which enable ease of movement and comfort. Materials are light and airy--certainly a necessity in Kyoto’s sweltering summer heat!

Much of the line also incorporates the modern Japanese design aesthetic of combining stylish with cute and fun. Below we’d love to highlight five categories of products from this new line that you really shouldn’t miss out on!

1. Shirts and T-Shirts

Let’s start with the basics, and look at some of the tops on offer in this fun collection. Among their most popular items, SOU・SOU’s shirts incorporate a particularly eclectic balance of old and new, utilizing traditional materials and design elements, but implementing them in a uniquely modern way. These shirts can add elegance and style to anyone’s activewear closet.

A large portion of the shirts from this summer range are made from light chizimi cotton, and are ideal for hot weather. Kyoto Yuzen style dyeing has also been used for creating many of the prints. Kyoto Yuzen dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868) and this exquisite pattern dyeing method has long been used on traditional items such as kimonos and fans.

2. Bottoms

SOU・SOU’s distinctive and very popular harem pants take clear influences from traditional Japanese clothing and are both extremely comfortable and stylish. The triangular shape of these particular pants was inspired by Kyoto’s Daimonji mountain, and the triangular shape makes them perfect for cycling comfortably.

Jodhpurs are a style of pants originally from India, which are loose at the top and tapered down the bottom of the leg. They are comfortable and allow for ease of movement. In more modern times they have been adapted for use as equestrian wear, and are very popular among horse riders. SOU・SOU and Le Coq Sportif have adapted the pants once again, this time making them ideal for bicycle riding!

Their traditional Japanese-style steteco pants have also been given a new twist, being adapted specifically for cyclists, with easy-to-access pockets.

The line also offers comfortable and stylish cargo pants and bicycle shorts, of course featuring many of SOU・SOU’s fun and distinctive prints.

3. Footwear

This range includes particularly unique and eye-catching footwear that we really can’t get enough of!

SOU・SOU’s tabi shoes (or split-toed shoes) are a staple of the brand, and something truly unique that you won’t find elsewhere. This collaboration produced some really fun tabi sneakers - we’re particularly loving the polka dots and little bicycle details! The range also includes both regular and high-top sneakers.

The Montpellier sneakers are also stunning with their high-quality Takashima canvas from Shiga Prefecture, fun and colorful designs, and Yuzen-style silkscreen printing. The flower designs are breathtaking.

Lastly, summer isn’t complete without flip-flops and sandals! The cotton sandals are manufactured in Nara Prefecture and combine a very traditional style of footwear with colorful, fun and totally adorable prints!! Each one is like a mini work of art!

4. Hats and Visors

Hats are an essential summer item for many who spend prolonged amounts of time outdoors! These particular hats are fantastic for cyclists as well as those doing various other outdoor activities this summer!

The reversible hats feature hand-printed Yuzen designs, and give wearers the option of a cute check print featuring SOU・SOU’s famous SO-SU-U number design, or a more classic solid color.

The range also includes a hat with sun shade at the back, specially designed for cyclists. The shade itself is detachable, making for a very versatile item.

For backpacks, there’s a choice between large canvas backpacks, as well as their cute large and small box backpacks. They feature adorable polka dot and SO-SU-U designs, and come in many different colors, including stylish black and fun, bright shades. Designs are printed using Yuzen-style silkscreen printing, and these backpacks feature many pockets.
