The green lantern shop celebrates its 5th anniversary
"Ono Udon Yoshikura" (hereinafter "Yoshikura") is a restaurant that opened in June 2018. It is a 5-minute drive from the Miki Ono IC on the Sanyo Expressway, and is immediately accessible after turning west at the "Tenjin" intersection on National Route 175.
"Yoshikura" is written in kanji as "Yoshikura." The kanji for "yoshi" comes from "auspicious sign" and "kura" means "house," and the name was chosen with the hope that the place would be "a place where you can feel happy and relax like at home."
The green lanterns hanging in front of the store are a sign that the store supports local products. "We use flour made from wheat grown in Ono and have a noodle factory in Kato City make our original noodles.
"The eggs are from Kosaka Poultry Farm. We have confidence in our noodles and eggs," says store manager Taizo Komurasaki.
The restaurant has individually separated table seats, tatami seating, and counter seats that can be used casually by individuals, and is designed to cater to all ages and customer demographics, including families, couples, and solo diners.
These counter seats are convenient for office workers visiting alone at lunchtime.
Each table is equipped with three types of soy sauce. All of them are from Takahashi Soy Sauce, a brewery in the neighboring city of Kasai. Takahashi Soy Sauce was founded in the Taisho era and continues to make soy sauce using the same methods as in the past.
From the left, they are dark soy sauce, dashi soy sauce, and soy sauce for egg on rice, but you are free to use it however you like. "I really recommend dashi soy sauce, it's delicious on anything, not just udon," says Komurasaki.
The secret to its deliciousness is here
">
The menu is broadly divided into a diverse lineup of udon noodles with sauce, soup noodles, kamaage and kamatama noodles, zaru udon noodles, rice dishes (donburi), and set meals. Among them, the one that best conveys the deliciousness of the noodles and eggs is undoubtedly the "kamatama udon." All dishes except for kamatama udon use noodles that have been boiled and chilled once, but kamatama udon is not chilled, so the wheat flavor comes through directly.
Once an order is placed, the noodles are boiled for about 15 minutes, and then removed just as soon as they become soft and runny. They are then immediately transferred to a serving dish and topped with an Iron Chef egg and plenty of spring onions.
I poured the manager's recommended dashi soy sauce over it and mixed it. The noodles were chewy and firm, with a wheat flavor. The egg was very rich, and went perfectly with the mellow soy sauce.
"Delicious!" The dashi for the Kake Udon and Zaru Udon is made from a special dashi pack containing mixed dried fish and "geso" (flesh) procured from Kagawa, the home of udon. The dashi is used as a white dashi and is blended with the Kake Udon and Soup Udon Kaeshi in the appropriate ratios.
"If you make the soup in advance, it will boil down and lose its flavor, so we mix the stock and seasoning each time an order is placed," says Komurasaki.
Introducing popular menu items
">
Let's introduce some popular dishes. First up is the "Chicken Tempura with Grated Daikon Radish." All the tempura here is fried to order, with a crispy batter, and the "Chicken Tempura" is especially popular.
Among the menu items using chicken tempura, the one that is popular throughout the year is [Chicken tempura with grated radish].
">
This is the specialty "Conger eel tempura bowl." This tempura bowl is made with a whole carefully selected conger eel, and is very filling. It completely overflows from the bowl, so you can see how big it is. The crispy batter and thick meat of the conger eel tempura make it very satisfying to eat. It is available as a single dish for 750 yen, and as a set with a mini udon.
The photo shows the "Yoshikura Rice Bowl Set," which comes with a choice of three mini udon dishes: hot udon, chilled grated yam soup, and chilled plum soup.
">
The "Yoshikura Udon Set" is a set of your choice of udon and rice. For an additional 200 yen, you can choose from six types of rice: grated yam rice, mentaiko rice, egg rice, fried egg rice, tsukimi shirasu rice, and white rice (150 yen), making it a great value.
I'm happy with the variety of services
Near the entrance, there is a capsule machine for children who come to the store. There are 1st to 5th prizes, and there are no blanks, so the 1st prize is a 500 yen coupon. There is also a stamp card, where you get one stamp for every 500 yen you spend, and if you collect 30 stamps, you will get a 500 yen coupon.
Furthermore, if you become friends with us on LINE, you can always enjoy a 50 yen discount. "The COVID-19 pandemic has been really tough, and the challenge was how persistent we could be. While the prices of various things such as raw materials and supplies have increased, we have done our best without raising our prices. Our store is near the Ono industrial park, so many factory workers use it, so we offer extra large portions of rice for free so that they can eat a lot," says store manager Komurasaki.
Yoshikura is making various efforts in both software and hardware. I can see why it is so popular.
