Hyogo Ceramic Art Museum is a museum where you can learn about ceramic culture and history. They also hold pottery classes, so we recommend trying your hand at making your own original items. We will introduce the highlights of the Hyogo Ceramic Art Museum.

Latest update :

A collection centered on pottery from Hyogo Prefecture, such as Tanba ware.

The Hyogo Ceramic Art Museum, which opened in 2005, is located in Imada-cho, Tamba-Sasayama City, which is known as the "village of Tamba-yaki." Focusing on the ceramics collected by Mr. Hiroshi Tanaka, the president of Zentan Bus, we have not only local Tamba ware, but also old ceramics made in Hyogo Prefecture such as Mita ware, Higashiyama ware, and Izushi ware, as well as modern ceramics from Japan and abroad. This is an art museum that has a collection of.

Of the Hiroshi Tanaka Collection, 657 items were designated as Important Tangible Cultural Properties by Hyogo Prefecture in 2018.

Tamba ware, one of Japan's six oldest kilns, dates back to the end of the Heian period. It is a pottery with a long history that was created by incorporating the techniques of pottery production in the Tokai region into the locally made Sue ware.

Inside the museum, there is also a permanent exhibition of Tamba ware called ``The World of Tamba ware,'' where you can see pottery works from hundreds of years ago, such as the Muromachi period and the Edo period.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, we hold "special exhibitions" four times a year and "themed exhibitions" that introduce more than 3,000 items from our collection. The special exhibition “The Joy of Demitasse Cups” will be held from June 10th (Saturday) to August 27th (Sunday), 2023. Workshops and commemorative lectures related to special exhibitions are sometimes held, so please be sure to check them out if you are interested.

The grounds are dotted with objects with Tamba ware motifs. Because it is a place surrounded by nature, the air is clear and it feels great to take a walk.

When I walked to the south side of the museum, I discovered the tea room ``Genan,'' which is quietly nestled among the greenery. It can also be used for formal tea ceremonies, and is equipped with an 8-tatami tea room and standing seats (advance application required for use).

From beginners to advanced users! Ceramics courses are also available.

The Hyogo Ceramic Art Museum also focuses on pottery workshops and pottery culture courses, with courses ranging from beginners to advanced pottery courses where you can receive direct instruction from Tamba-yaki potters.

We recommend the ``First Electric Potter's Pottery Pottery Making Experience,'' which can be completed in one day. This program is aimed at elementary school students and older, and allows you to experience making pottery using an electric potter's wheel.

After watching the demonstration by the pottery instructor, you can immediately start creating using the electric potter's wheel! You can make up to 3 items such as tea bowls, beer cups, and small plates that are within 20cm in height and width.

Don't worry even if it's your first time as the pottery instructor will teach you carefully.<br>

The journey takes approximately 5 hours, including a lunch break in the middle. The created pieces are fired in a facility and are completed in about 50 days. You can use the completed work for yourself at home, or give it as a gift. If you make it yourself, you'll definitely have more fun using it.

Please note that advance registration is required for this course. If there are too many applications, a lottery will be held (please check the website for course dates).
