Sumiyoshi Taisha stands majestically to the east of Sumiyoshi Taisha Station on the Nankai Main Line. Nearby are the Anryu Hondori Shopping Street, Anryu Chuo Shopping Street, and Kohama Shopping Street, which are filled with the atmosphere of the old downtown area. Sumiyoshi Taisha, affectionately called "Sumiyossan" by locals, was founded 211 years ago and is the head shrine of the approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrine across Japan.
The grounds are surrounded by greenery and feature the four main shrine, which are designated national treasures and convey ancient architectural style, the Sorihachi Bridge(Taikobashi) that is the symbol of Sumiyoshi, numerous cultural assets, and a sacred tree that is over 1,000 years old, making this a historic shrine with a sense of eternal history.
It is also known for continuing to hold various ancient Shinto rituals throughout the year in the same format as they were back then.
On January 7th of the new year, the Aouma Shinto Ceremony is held, in which the sacred horse Hakusetsu makes a pilgrimage to each main shrine. It is said that seeing a white horse at the beginning of the year will ward off evil spirits, so many people visit the shrine to mark the first day of the year.
The Sumiyoshi Festival is held in the summer. The Yoimiyamasai is held on July 30th, followed by the Annual Festival and Nagoshinoharaeshinji on the 31st. At the Mikoshi Togyo on August 1st, a grand festival is held in which the spirit of Sumiyoshi Okami is transferred to a mikoshi (portable shrine) and paraded in a procession to the Shukuin Tongu of Shukuin Tonmiya in Otabisho .
It is a spectacular sight to see the large mikoshi (portable shrine) weighing about 2 tons cross the Sorihachi Bridge. From the Mikoshi Arai Shinji ceremony held on Marine Day in July, the mikoshi is displayed within the shrine grounds, so you can enjoy it any time you visit.
Come and experience the breath of history and tradition at the Shinto ceremonies held throughout the year.
