Discover Japan's hidden cultural heritage: Saigū Shrine in Meiwa-cho
Located in the quiet countryside of Mie Prefecture, Meiwacho Saigū is a special place that offers a glimpse into Japan's imperial past.
In the past, Saigū was the home of the Saiō, an imperial princess chosen to serve Ise Jingū. Before performing their sacred roles, the Saiō purified themselves at Nonomiya in Sagano, Kyoto.
This historic ceremony demonstrates the cultural importance of Saigu.
The Saio system lasted for over 660 years, but came to an end during the turmoil of the Northern and Southern Courts period.
Nevertheless, the heritage lives on to this day, and traces of it can be seen within the town today as the "Nonomiya ruins."
Experience Noh "Nonomiya" on a Heian period stage: a special evening experiencing authentic culture
On November 4th, a special Noh performance of "Nonomiya" will be held in Meiwa Town.
The performance will take place at Saiku Heian no Mori, a life-size reconstruction of a building from the Heian period, set at the historic site of Nonomiya Ruins, where the Saio once purified herself.
The story is set against the backdrop of the Japanese classic, The Tale of Genji, and tells the heartbreaking tale of Lady Rokujo, a wandering ghost.
This special performance will be accompanied by commentary by Kanze School shite actor Kanze Yoshimasa, a holder of the Intangible Cultural Property, and there is also a plan available that provides snacks and cold weather gear between performances.
The tour also includes an experience plan that allows you to try on a Noh costume, making it a very rare opportunity to experience traditional performing arts firsthand.
Enjoy a special evening in this historic location, immersed in timeless culture and experiencing the beauty of Japan.
