Pocket WiFi refers to devices that serve as WiFi hotspots, as shown in the photo above.
Typically, they are provided in a pouch. Common pickup locations include airports and hotels.
I have used Pocket WiFi during my travels in Japan and Hong Kong.
When I used it in Japan, I was moving around various places in Tokyo for work, and the Pocket WiFi was extremely convenient.
At that time, I was using an old smartphone. However, with Pocket WiFi, I didn’t need to tether, which helped preserve the battery life of my smartphone, allowing me to work on my computer for extended periods. This was really beneficial.
Additionally, in recent years, the routers have become more compact. The pouch containing the Pocket WiFi set easily fit in the corner of my backpack, making it convenient to carry around.
However, one drawback I felt was that Pocket WiFi requires compensation in the event of damage or loss (there's paid insurance available). I have never encountered such a situation, but I was careful when carrying it around.
Next, let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of eSIMs.

eSIM stands for Embedded SIM.
With traditional SIM cards, it was necessary to remove the card from the device's slot to swap it out. However, with eSIM, it can be used simply by making changes through the smartphone settings, and purchasing and receiving it can also be done entirely online.
eSIM is a new service, and products aimed at travelers to Japan have been rapidly increasing since around 2024.
I have used eSIM in both Japan and South Korea.
Since everything is handled through a single smartphone, it is very easy to carry around. It feels just like using your smartphone in your home country, making it incredibly convenient. (In particular, when I used World eSIM in South Korea, I was impressed by the smoothness of the connection.)
However, there is one pitfall with eSIM. In fact, I applied for eSIM during a trip to Taiwan, but for some reason, I was unable to activate it successfully.
The services I used at that time were World eSIM and Saily. Even after contacting customer support and adjusting APN settings for both, I could not resolve the issue until the end (looking back, the smartphone model I was using may have had some issues due to being outdated).
Given that such situations can occur, those who are concerned might find it safer to choose Pocket WiFi.
Additionally, while I have tried multiple Pocket WiFi and eSIM options, I generally feel that Pocket WiFi often provides smoother connectivity.
After comparing from various perspectives, I believe that:
- If you want a light and convenient sightseeing experience, go for eSIM.
- If you plan to use a computer or gaming devices extensively during your stay in Japan, or if you have concerns about connectivity, choose Pocket WiFi.
This way, you can make the best choice for your needs!
Whether eSIM or Pocket WiFi is better depends on the individual. If you want to use the internet as cheaply as possible, eSIM is the way to go. If you need to use a large amount of data, Pocket WiFi would be the better choice.
eSIM is very convenient for traveling in Japan. It can be purchased with just online procedures, and it doesn’t add any extra weight to your luggage. Additionally, there are many affordable plans available, allowing you to choose one that fits your budget.
Yes, there are many companies that offer eSIM services for travel to Japan. For example, World eSIM provides a total of 12 plans tailored for travelers in Japan, including unlimited plans, fixed data plans, and daily data plans. Additionally, there are options like Sakura Mobile's eSIM, which can be convenient for longer stays of six months or more.
Pocket WiFi is very convenient when traveling in Japan. It can be set up easily; you just need to enter the password in the WiFi settings of your computer or smartphone to start using it immediately. Furthermore, services like NINJA WiFi and Japan Wireless offer large amounts of data at reasonable prices.
