Find the Best Matcha in Tokyo

With its deep cultural heritage and rich aroma, matcha has captivated tea lovers worldwide. While Japan’s most famous production areas are Uji (Kyoto) and Shizuoka, you don’t have to travel far to find the good stuff.

Tokyo is home to an incredible array of cafes and shops serving everything from traditional whisked matcha and creamy lattes to decadent tea-infused desserts. (Our office is often mistaken for one of these spots simply because we share the name MATCHA—sorry to any disappointed visitors!)

To help you navigate the city’s green tea scene, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite, tried-and-tested matcha spots in Tokyo.

The first eight locations are cafes where you can enjoy rich matcha flavors and desserts in a comfortable indoor setting. The following four are take-out shops, perfect for grabbing a drink on the go.

At the end, we’ve included an Uji matcha specialty shop for those seeking premium, ceremonial-grade matcha tea.

1. ZEN PUNK MATCHA Tokyo Ginza: Perfectly Whisked, Creamy Lattes

ZEN PUNK MATCHA Tokyo Ginza

ZEN PUNK MATCHA Tokyo Ginza is an innovative concept store by the ROAR COFFEE brand, located on a corner in Higashi-Ginza.

The shop is highly functional, offering Wi-Fi and power outlets, but the real draw is the atmosphere: guests can enjoy a front-row view of tea masters whisking matcha and crafting intricate latte art.

The shop is also a photographer’s dream. Knowing that travelers love to capture the moment, the counter is equipped with dedicated spotlights positioned directly over the matcha bowls, ensuring every shot looks professional.

ZEN PUNK MATCHA Tokyo Ginza

The menu features premium domestic organic matcha, available either sweetened or unsweetened.

We tried the ZEN PUNK MATCHA latte (unsweetened) alongside a taro-filled dorayaki. The latte was creamy with a pleasant bitterness and a fragrant finish, while the dorayaki was remarkably moist and perfectly sweet without being too heavy.

Jugetsudo

Jugetsudo specializes in original blends made from high-quality Shizuoka tea and vibrant, emerald-green leaves from Kagoshima. Their diverse menu ranges from matcha lattes and puddings to unique treats like matcha French toast and financiers.

During our visit, we tried the Nakashima Method Matcha Parfait. The matcha strikes a perfect balance—starting with a subtle astringency that transitions into a sweet, mellow aftertaste—with every bite releasing a rich, deep aroma.

Together, they envisioned a space where premium matcha is accessible and enjoyed freely by everyone. Committed to tradition, the shop exclusively uses matcha ground by stone mills across its rotating seasonal menu.

The dessert selection, featuring highlights like the matcha mille-feuille and tiramisu, is as visually stunning as it is flavorful.

Meanwhile, the signature matcha latte uses Ogurayama tea to achieve a sophisticated balance of bitterness and sweetness, allowing an elegant aroma to linger on the palate.

5. Hibiya Hayashiya Shinbei: The Origins of the Matcha Parfait

Hibiya Hayashiya Shinbei parfait

Founded in 1753, the lineage of Hayashiya Shinbei began in Kanazawa before its third-generation successor relocated to the mist-covered mountains of Uji, Kyoto, to perfect the cultivation of premium, aromatic tea.

While matcha was once strictly reserved for formal ceremonies, this shop famously rewrote the history of Japanese sweets by inventing the now-global sensation: the Matcha Parfait.

This "avant-garde" innovation at their Sanjo branch successfully integrated high-grade tea into popular desserts. Today, the shop continues to use traditional stone-ground matcha to preserve the tea's delicate aroma, carefully selecting specific varieties to complement each unique treat.

Their signature parfait offers a sophisticated balance of natural bitterness and elegance, ensuring a refreshing finish that is never overly sweet.

By eschewing traditional blending in favor of hand-picked leaves sourced from single tea gardens, the brand ensures a pure and unadulterated experience.

Guests can soak in the cultural atmosphere of Nihonbashi from the breezy outdoor seating area or opt for the exclusive, reservation-only tea room.

They manage their own tea gardens in Kagoshima and meticulously source organic leaves from renowned regions like Uji and Shizuoka.

To ensure the best experience, the shop selects specific matcha powders tailored to each drink. The hot matcha latte, for instance, features a smooth-tasting variety blended with pasteurized milk to preserve its fresh flavor and nutritional value.

Sweetened with natural, specially cultivated brown sugar from Kagoshima, the latte offers a rich texture and a deeply aromatic fragrance from the very first sip.

12. Hatoya Ryoyousha Shibuya: Refreshing Takeout Matcha Drinks

Hatoya Ryoyousha Shibuya

Hatoya Ryoyousha was born from a chance encounter between a barista and the world of Japanese tea. Drawing on a sharp intuition for flavor, the owner opened a cozy tea space in Arashiyama, Kyoto, in 2019.

By visiting tea plantations annually to assist with the harvest, he transforms the passion of local producers into "tradition-defying" artisanal drinks.

Their Tokyo location, Hachijyu-hachi Shibuya, offers takeout alongside a pet-friendly terrace and indoor seating.

A standout is the Matcha Latte No. 1, which is whisked to order with a traditional chasen to release a vivid, potent aroma. To elevate the experience, guests can add shiratama (mochi balls) or ice cream for a more complex and indulgent layer of flavor.
