Moominvalley Park: A Fairytale-like Destination near Tokyo

Tove Jansson's beloved troll characters, the Moomins, have their own theme park near Tokyo!

Moominvalley Park opened in March 2019 and is located in Hanno City, about 50 minutes by train from Tokyo's Ikebukuro Station. This facility is not only Asia's first Moomin-themed park but also the second Moomin park in the world outside Finland.

Moominvalley Park comprises exhibitions, playgrounds, a theater, as well as cafes and restaurants, making it ideal for a day trip from Tokyo. Moreover, it is surrounded by nature, boasting beautiful scenery and seasonal charm.

Enter the Enchanting World of the Moomins!

Unlike typical theme parks, at Moominvalley Park, you won’t find large, glamorous amusement rides. Instead, it’s an experiential park centered around nature and stories.

The park is divided into four areas: Welcome Cove, Moominvalley, Kokemus, and Lonely Mountain. Let’s explore them together!

Moominvalley is the place where Moomin and his friends live, and traces of Moomin and others can be found everywhere.

The most eye-catching feature is this blue, red-tiled, pointed cottage, which is the Moomin House—the home where Moomin and his family reside.

Inside, everything from the carpets, tableware, to decorations has been carefully selected and brought from Finland, faithfully reproducing the living environment of the Finnish little spirit family, Moomin and his family.

Even Moomin's father’s favorite milk candies can be found everywhere.

Inside, there are many interactive experiences. Visitors can join a guided tour taking place every 30 minutes from 10:00 to 20:00. (Fee: 1,000 yen per person paid separately from the park ticket)

"Kokemus" means “experience” in Finnish. This seemingly the most modern building within the park actually contains all the secrets of the Moomins.

Step into the white corridor at the center of the first floor. Carefully observe the purple floral decorations on both sides—many characters are hidden among the leaves.

At the end of the corridor, we will be greeted by the creator of the Moomins, Tove Jansson.

Tove Jansson published the first novel in the Moomin series at the end of World War II in 1945. The adorable characters and fantasy-filled stories were warmly received and also brought comfort to many hearts wounded by war.

In Kokemus, about half of the space displays the stories and works of Tove Jansson, including the creative process behind the Moomins, Tove Jansson's artwork, and the evolution of the Moomins.

Many scenes from the stories are recreated, complemented by sound and light effects as well as interactive experiences, allowing visitors to relive classic moments.

The other half of Kokemus features a large souvenir shop, a handmade craft experience area, and a restaurant. Don’t miss out on the exclusive and cute souvenirs only available here!

Badge participation fee: 500 yen each. Wooden ornaments: 1,500 yen per person. Nail art: 800 yen (can only design one nail)

4. Lonelymountain

Located on the hillside, Lonelymountain is an activity area where children can run and jump freely. The treehouse-shaped Hemulen's playground blends perfectly into the surrounding natural environment.

At the same time, there is the Hobgoblin's zipline, a high-altitude zip line that allows visitors to cross Miyazawa Lake within the park, experiencing the sensation of speed as if transformed into the wind.

Participants in Hemulen's playground must be at least 120 cm tall, under 190 cm tall, and weighing less than 100 kg. Fee: 1,500 yen per person (separate from the park ticket).

After exploring the vast park and getting tired, visitors can relax at the cafes or restaurants inside Kokemus, or visit the waffle restaurant, Lettula, in the Welcome Cove.
