In 2019, Waseda University began a full renovation and redesign of Building No. 4, next to the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum located on its main campus. In fall of 2021, this building will reopen as the International House of Literature, also known as the Haruki Murakami library.

Designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the new library will house Murakami's personal notes, manuscripts, and published works in both original and translated forms. It will even include the author's book reviews and some of his personal record collection!

The building will also feature various facilities including research rooms, audio spaces, a cafe, and more.

Haruki Murakami, born in 1949, is one of the most highly regarded novelists in Japan. Despite not beginning his writing career until the age of 29, Murakami has written more than 20 books that are available in English translation, as well as numerous essay and short story collections not yet translated.

These works are considered modern Japanese classics, and Murakami has attracted a sizable audience both in Japan and internationally.

Waseda University, of which Murakami is an alumnus, has not announced whether the new International House of Literature will be open to the public, but the possibilities are sure to excite any fan of this amazing Japanese author!
