Hotel Gajoen Tokyo has announced its latest exhibition A Miniature World x Hyakudan Kaidan: A Small World Unfolding in a Cultural Property, which will be on display until March 9, 2025.
This remarkable showcase invites visitors to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of miniatures, featuring a captivating blend of art, culture, and history, all set against the backdrop of the hotel’s stunning Hyakudan Kaidan, a Tokyo Metropolitan Designated Cultural Property.
The exhibition features approximately 1,150 miniatures created by 19 talented artists and collectors.
Attendees can marvel at meticulously crafted modern pieces, including miniature representations of everyday Japanese foods, personal cosmetics, and familiar cityscapes.
Highlights include an exquisite dollhouse from the late 1700s in England and intricate miniature homes designed using perspective techniques by former architects. Visitors are encouraged to get up close and immerse themselves in the detailed craftsmanship.
One of the exhibition rooms showcases a stunning collection of Hina Matsuri tools and Kashi Hina dolls from the Edo period, sourced from the prestigious doll shop Shichisawaya.
This remarkable display features around 1,000 pieces, including expertly crafted replicas of traditional hina tools and diminutive wooden dolls.
The exhibition also presents modern works by contemporary artist Mikiko Hayashi, such as shells depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji, offering a fascinating blend of history and artistry.
Inspired by the classic tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the exhibition transports visitors into a whimsical world.
Giant flower artist MEGU has created an oversized peony, measuring approximately 2.5 meters in diameter, welcoming guests through a fabric divider.
As visitors venture further, they experience the illusion of shrinking into a flower garden, surrounded by the scents of blooming flowers and experiencing scenes from Alice in Wonderland that play with perceptions of size and space.
Furthermore, the exhibition showcases whimsical, hollowed paperback books from Alice in Wonderland that reveal miniature scenes within.
These intricate dioramas depict various locations and characters from the beloved story, inviting guests to peek into the enchanting universe of Alice as they explore.
