This spring, the historic stone paths of Higashiyama will lead visitors into a shimmering narrative of sisterhood and samurai history. Kodai-ji Temple has officially launched its 2026 Spring Special Night Viewing, an annual tradition that has become a cornerstone of Kyoto’s evening culture.

Running from March 13 through May 6, 2026, the event transforms the temple’s Zen architecture into a high-tech theater. While Kodai-ji is famous for its connection to Nene (the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi), this season’s production reaches beyond its own walls to tell a story of regional solidarity.

By featuring the bond between Nene and her lifelong friend Matsu, the temple is sending a symbolic message of support to the Noto Peninsula, the ancestral home of Matsu’s Maeda clan, as the region continues its recovery from recent natural disasters.

Event Highlights

The Hashin-tei Digital Symphony

The Zen rock garden, Hashin-tei, serves as a sprawling white canvas for a multi-sensory masterpiece.

High-brightness laser projectors cast sharp, vivid patterns across the raked gravel, synchronized with a bespoke 3D spatial audio system.

The soundscape isn't just background music; it’s an immersive environment that uses directional audio to make the voices and whispers of history feel as though they are moving through the courtyard.

The Century-Old Sakura: A Living Co-Star

The crown jewel of Kodai-ji is its 100-year-old weeping cherry tree (shidarezakura).

This year, the projection mapping is specifically choreographed to interact with the tree's physical form. As digital petals fall in the projection, they blend seamlessly with the actual blossoms of the ancient tree, creating a surreal blurring of the lines between the natural world and digital artistry.

A Tale of Two Matriarchs: Nene and Matsu

Moving beyond simple patterns, the 2026 show is a narrative journey. It explores the friendship between Nene (Kita-no-Mandokoro) and Matsu (Hoshun-in), beginning with their early days as neighbors in the Owari era and following them through the unification of Japan.

The imagery focuses on their shared strength, portraying them not just as "wives of Great Men," but as political and emotional anchors who supported one another through the loss of children and the shifting tides of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Floral Symbolism and The Noto Tribute

The visual palette is deeply symbolic. The show prominently features the White Camellia (Nene’s favorite) and the Purple Rose of Sharon (Matsu’s favorite).

In a poignant nod to the ongoing recovery of the Noto Peninsula, the ancestral heartland of Matsu’s Maeda clan, the display uses light to weave these two flowers together, symbolizing a bridge of support from Kyoto to the Ishikawa region.

The Night-Time Economy Experience

As one of Kyoto's premier evening events, the night viewing offers a rare chance to see the temple’s architecture and Zen gardens under the moon, providing a starkly different atmosphere than the daytime crowds.

Kodai-ji remains a testament to Nene's devotion, and this spring, her garden once again serves as a bridge, not just between the past and present, but between two legendary friends whose bond outlasted the wars they lived through.
