Chidorigafuchi Floating Lantern Festival: July 22 and 23

The Chidorigafuchi Moat, famous as one of Tokyo’s most iconic spring cherry blossom destinations, is transforming into a magical wonderland for two summer nights on July 22 and 23, 2026.
The Imperial Palace Chidorigafuchi Floating Lantern Festival (Toro Nagashi) will feature 2,000 glowing lanterns floating across the dark water, each inscribed with handwritten messages of hope, gratitude, and reflection.
The serene, glowing landscape looks like a scene straight out of a storybook.
Local Treats and Cool Evenings at Neighborhood Favorites

Before or after viewing the lanterns, you can experience the tastes of a Japanese summer at beloved local establishments right around the venue.
At i i jikan, a cozy café and bar serving organic vegetable small plates, chicken curry, and lu rou fan alongside curated Japanese craft beers and wines, you can wrap up your night with their signature classic pudding.
Alternatively, Book House Cafe - Bar Lilliput offers a hidden adult hideaway tucked inside a famous children’s bookstore in the Jinbocho book district where you can relax with a cold cocktail while surrounded by 10,000 picture books.
For a refreshing summer meal, Teuchi Soba Zen is famous for its cold handmade soba, featuring a seasonal Sudachi Hamu-ten Soba topped with crisp sliced sudachi citrus and hearty daggertooth pike conger tempura to help you cool down after the festival.
Air-Conditioned Cultural Spots to Escape the Heat

If you want to head to the area early, you can spend a quiet, intellectual afternoon inside the air-conditioned cultural venues located within neighboring Kitanomaru Park.
At the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT), visitors can browse the MOMAT Collection exhibition or explore the large-scale photography solo exhibition titled Hiroshi Sugimoto: Extinction Photo, then unwind in the Room with a View lounge overlooking the Imperial Palace.
Nearby, the National Archives of Japan features a special exhibition called Travelers Head East: The Allure of Eastern Japan in Classical Literature and will extend its hours until 20:00 on the nights of the festival.

Another great option is the Science Museum, an interactive space filled with fantastic hands-on exhibits, though visitors should note that it will be closed on Wednesday, July 22.
Guided Sake Tastings and Multilingual Student Volunteers

To make the event completely stress-free for international travelers, local students from Kanda Institute of Foreign Languages, Kyoritsu Women's University, and Nishogakusha University will be on-site as volunteer staff. Around 30 students per day will provide multilingual announcements, directions, and explanations on how to enjoy the lantern traditions.

For a premium experience, visitors can also book the Historic Kanda Sake Tasting at Tokyo’s Oldest Shop tour (operated by JLB TOURS). On July 22 and 23, this special package takes guests through a premium sake tasting at the historic Toshimaya shop in Kanda before guiding them directly to the lantern festival venue.
Keep the Night Going with TOKYO After Dark in Marunouchi

The magical atmosphere doesn't have to end when the lanterns fade. From July 1 to August 14, 2026, the neighboring Marunouchi district is hosting TOKYO After Dark in Marunouchi.
This special summer campaign showcases sophisticated ways to enjoy Tokyo's nightlife. Visitors can experience stunning open-air terraces perfect for catching the sunset, scenic photo spots, premium dinner options, night walking tours, and special bar-hopping tickets.
It is the perfect destination to continue your evening after taking in the beautiful sights at Chidorigafuchi.
