Taste Local Specialties
At Medetaiya, you can find classic dishes from the food stalls of Fukuoka along with a variety of different menus. However, there are also seasonal menus such as the oden which is only served during the colder months of the year.
Here we will feature some of the popular dishes of Medetaiya to get a taste of the authentic local cuisine while ordering at a food stall!
A Must-Have in the Winter - Oden
If you visit during the winter season (October - March), oden is one of the must-try dishes here. Oden is a stew that many Japanese people love. It is always served warm and it is a perfect dish on a cold day that is sure to warm your heart and soul!
When you can't choose what to eat, you can always ask for recommendations from the chef. They will select five pieces for you to taste.
Perfect with Beer - Motsuyaki (Grilled Offal)
Hakata is known for their delicious motsu nabe stew. Motsuyaki (290 yen) is made with motsu (beef or pork offal) that has been grilled with Chinese chives and is a popular menu at Medetaiya. The bold flavor of the miso sauce makes a perfect match with beer.
Specialty of Hakata - Motsu Nabe (Offal Stew)
Standard food stalls do not have many cooking utensils or refrigerators, so providing motsu nabe in a food stall is considered to be very difficult. However, since Medetaiya is an indoor facility, there is no problem with that. The motsu nabe stall is operated by a famous franchise that is known to provide great tasting offal stew.
The motsu is served fresh and has a nice texture. A one person serving is 480 yen (orders start at two-person servings) and comes with plenty of vegetables as well. The delicious flavors are sure to make you forget you are sitting in a food stall.
A Must-Have in Hakata - Mentai Udon
Lastly, we would like to introduce Kamatama Mentai Udon (650 yen). In standard food stalls, this dish is served with ramen noodles, but at Medetaiya, you can eat it with udon noodles. According to certain theories, it is said that Fukuoka was the birthplace of udon.
Here is the kamatama udon where you can eat the noodles with mentaiko (spicy cod roe) and raw egg. The raw egg eases the spiciness of the mentaiko, making it easier and flavorful to eat.
Japanese Sake in Cute Bottles
Aside from local dishes, you can enjoy draught beer, wine, shochu liquor, and Japanese sake. The one cup Japanese sake (from 500 yen) is popular for its cute designs on the bottles.
In Conclusion
The manager Mr. Takeyama is able to speak English, so even if you do not understand Japanese, you can learn more about the dishes and the food stall culture from him. According to him "conversations are part of the fun in food stall culture"!
Next time you visit Fukuoka, how about stopping by and savoring some delicious local dishes of Hakata in a food stall at Hakata Yatai Medetaiya!
