Upon arriving at Misakiguchi Station, you will immediately see how Misaki people value their maguro (tuna). The name board of the station is decorated with a tuna painting, and because the letter for "guchi" looks similar to the letter "ro" in "Maguro", "Misaki-guchi" has been modified to "Misaki-maguro". (*This signboard is not permanent. It is being used for a limited period of time.)

The thick forest at the beginning of the trail

Just one step into the forest and you will notice that all the industrial noise of the city is blocked by the thick wall of trees and by the deep valley terrain. Suddenly, you will find yourself standing in the middle of a great orchestra where the musicians are some faraway animals, the foliage rustling in the wind or the stream flowing gently along the path.

It is said that Koajiro Forest is the only forest that hosts an original ecosystem from river to ocean in the Greater Tokyo area. Do pay attention to the change of scenery as you advance further inside: from the moist forest full of Konara oaks and ferns, to the wetland where willows and reeds dwell, and finally, where the river ends and the ocean begins - the vast body of water in Sagami Bay.

The restaurant we recommend this time is called Tachibana. It has two buildings: the annex, a dining place with tables which is right at the main road, and the main building, which has tatami rooms and is located at the back. For the value of 2,600 yen, you can choose from various tuna dishes: grilled tuna, sushi, sashimi or a rice bowl topped with raw tuna (* Please be aware that only certain dishes can be ordered using the Maguro Pass). Each set comes with miso soup, pickles, vegetable and dessert.

The restaurant is decorated in traditional Japanese style, with walls and furniture in a warm brown color, small pots of flowers here and there, and gentle music running in the background. While relaxing and enjoying the freshness of maguro and the combination of many delicate spices, you can also witness the very lively port life through the window pane.

The boat departing at 13:30 will take you to Miyagawa Bay. The guide will tell you about the history of Misaki, show you the view of Chiba Prefecture in the distance and introduce to you the many amazing fish and seabirds in the waters of Misaki.

You are invited to go down to the underwater room which has glass windows for the passengers to enjoy the view of the fish swimming in the sea. This will be an unforgettable experience!

It will take you around 10 minutes to walk from the port to the Misaki Seafood Local Wholesale Market. After registering at the front desk on the second floor, you will enter the observation area. The first floor is reserved only for people who participate in the bidding.

Hundreds of tuna fish preserved at -60oC are being brought into the market. The wholesalers will write the price on a piece of paper and pass it to the market staff. This method is very different from Tsukiji, where people usually bid by shouting the price.

After the bidding, how about one more fun activity that is specific to Misaki? 10 minutes walk away from the market, you will find a store called Miura Glass Studio Kirari in a small and tranquil alley. Here you can exchange your second C ticket included in the Maguro Pass for a candle making experience.

There are more than 12 sand colors and a table full of decorations for you to choose from in order to create your original candle! The decorations are not included in the ticket, and their price range is from 30 yen to 490 yen.

After you have finished your design, hot wax will be poured on top of the product and it takes around 20 minutes for the wax to cool down. At the end of the workshop, you'll have your own lovely candle as a souvenir from Misaki.
