Let us introduce a model course you can refer to in order to fully enjoy two days in Misaki, the Maguro paradise.
Day 1: Enchanting Forest and Romantic Ocean View
8:00 -- Receive Your Maguro Pass at Shinagawa Station
You can exchange your voucher for the KEIKYU Misaki Maguro Pass at Keikyu office located near the Takanawa Exit of Shinagawa Station. The procedure will take only 5 minutes but to avoid the queue, do consider arriving early so that you don't need to rush to the train you want to take.
You will need to show your Maguro Pass to the station staff or bus drivers every time you use Keikyu transportation, so it may be convenient to keep it somewhere easy to reach, like your pocket or pass holder.
8:09 - 9:32 -- Towards Misakiguchi Station
Get on the Keikyu Limited Express towards Misakiguchi Station at 8:09, from platform No.1. The trains departing from this platform are headed toward various directions so please make sure you board on the right train. The train for Misakiguchi is marked in green, so you will have to find the green areas on the floor and queue up there. Be careful because if you stand in the wrong queue, you may not be able to board.
The whole journey will take around one hour and a half. You can either stare out the window or kill time with a nice book.
9:45 - 11:00 -- A Forest Trail along the River
Upon arriving at Misakiguchi Station, you will immediately see how Misaki people value their maguro (tuna). The name board of the station is decorated with a tuna painting, and because the letter for "guchi" looks similar to the letter "ro" in "Maguro", "Misaki-guchi" has been modified to "Misaki-maguro". (*This signboard is not permanent. It is being used for a limited period of time.)
The 9:45 bus towards Keikyu Aburatsubo Marine Park from stop No. 1 at the Misakiguchi Station bus terminal will bring you to Koajiro Forest. Just get off at Hikibashi and follow the map next to the bus stand.
When you see the board in the picture above, keep going down the slope ahead and you will see the entrance of the forest in no time. The whole trail will take around one hour.
The thick forest at the beginning of the trail
Just one step into the forest and you will notice that all the industrial noise of the city is blocked by the thick wall of trees and by the deep valley terrain. Suddenly, you will find yourself standing in the middle of a great orchestra where the musicians are some faraway animals, the foliage rustling in the wind or the stream flowing gently along the path.
It is said that Koajiro Forest is the only forest that hosts an original ecosystem from river to ocean in the Greater Tokyo area. Do pay attention to the change of scenery as you advance further inside: from the moist forest full of Konara oaks and ferns, to the wetland where willows and reeds dwell, and finally, where the river ends and the ocean begins - the vast body of water in Sagami Bay.
This forest is home to over 1800 species of plants and animals. Take a careful look while on the trail. You will see insects welcoming you everywhere, frogs camouflaged in the muddy swamp or herds of sparrows hiding in the reeds.
11:00 – 14:20 -- Enjoy Your Time at Misaki Port
From Koajiro Forest, it will take you around 20-25 minutes to reach Aburatsubo-iriguchi bus stop. Take the 11:26 bus towards Jogashima and get off at Misaki Port.
You'll notice right away how popular is maguro (tuna) in this port town: there are maguro restaurants one after another, lining both the main streets and the back alleys. You can choose to exchange ticket B from your KEIKYU Misaki Maguro Pass for a tuna meal at the more than 20 restaurants listed in the guidebook.
The restaurant we recommend this time is called Tachibana. It has two buildings: the annex, a dining place with tables which is right at the main road, and the main building, which has tatami rooms and is located at the back. For the value of 2,600 yen, you can choose from various tuna dishes: grilled tuna, sushi, sashimi or a rice bowl topped with raw tuna (* Please be aware that only certain dishes can be ordered using the Maguro Pass). Each set comes with miso soup, pickles, vegetable and dessert.

The restaurant is decorated in traditional Japanese style, with walls and furniture in a warm brown color, small pots of flowers here and there, and gentle music running in the background. While relaxing and enjoying the freshness of maguro and the combination of many delicate spices, you can also witness the very lively port life through the window pane.
One a nice day like this, many people will gather at the port to draw, picnic or go for a walk. What do you think about taking a little walk after lunch under the sun?
While at Misaki Port, how about taking part in one of the unique activities that can be enjoyed here? We highly recommend going for a ride on the Nijiiro Sakana Glass-bottom Boat. Before boarding, don’t forget to exchange one of your C tickets for a boarding pass at the Urari Marche.
The boat departing at 13:30 will take you to Miyagawa Bay. The guide will tell you about the history of Misaki, show you the view of Chiba Prefecture in the distance and introduce to you the many amazing fish and seabirds in the waters of Misaki.
You are invited to go down to the underwater room which has glass windows for the passengers to enjoy the view of the fish swimming in the sea. This will be an unforgettable experience!
15:00 - Check in at Jogashima Keikyu Hotel, a Seaside Hotel with a Mount Fuji View
Because we'll continue our exploration of the Misaki area on the next day from early in the morning, we chose to stay overnight at a hotel on Jogashima Island: the Jogashima Keikyu Hotel. After our exploration of Misaki Port we headed to the hotel to check in and take a little rest.
Take the 14:28 bus towards Jogashima from the Misaki Port bus stop No. 1 and get off at the last stop, Jogashima. Jogashima Keikyu Hotel is located near a beautiful lighthouse on top of a small hill, only 10 minutes away from the bus terminal.
Jogashima Keikyu Hotel has 30 tatami rooms with large windows looking out to the ocean. If the sky is clear enough, you can even see Mount Fuji from the lobby on the 1st floor and even from your own room.
Until dinnertime, you have a couple of hours to take a rest or go strolling around the island. Jogashima offers a 2.5 km hiking trail with a spectacular view of the ocean, especially at sunset. However, in the cold season, the sky will get dark around 17:00 so be sure to bring with you a flashlight and return early to the hotel.
This refined and eye-pleasing dinner at Jogashima Keikyu Hotel will introduce you to various fresh and nutritious dishes made with ingredients from both the sea and mountains: tuna, turban shell, greater amberjack, mushrooms and several kinds of vegetable. You will notice the fine balance between hot and cold food which has a soothing effect on your body.
The hotel also offers various leisure activities such as hot springs with an outdoor bath, a karaoke room or massage.
You can also go out to enjoy the night breeze and relax under the perfect starry sky, just one minute walk to the shore.
Day 2: Tuna Biddings and Candle Making Experience
A traditional Japanese breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 in the hall on the 2nd floor of Jogashima Keikyu Hotel. Please enjoy your breakfast early so that you can make it in time for the famous tuna biddings which take place from 8:00 to 9:30 in Misaki.
Try to take the 8:33 bus towards Misakiguchi Station from Jogashima bus stop No. 2 and get off at Misaki Port. The dates of the biddings and types of fish on sale differ every week so it’s better to inquire at the hotel for additional information before going.
It will take you around 10 minutes to walk from the port to the Misaki Seafood Local Wholesale Market. After registering at the front desk on the second floor, you will enter the observation area. The first floor is reserved only for people who participate in the bidding.
Hundreds of tuna fish preserved at -60oC are being brought into the market. The wholesalers will write the price on a piece of paper and pass it to the market staff. This method is very different from Tsukiji, where people usually bid by shouting the price.
After the bidding, how about one more fun activity that is specific to Misaki? 10 minutes walk away from the market, you will find a store called Miura Glass Studio Kirari in a small and tranquil alley. Here you can exchange your second C ticket included in the Maguro Pass for a candle making experience.
There are more than 12 sand colors and a table full of decorations for you to choose from in order to create your original candle! The decorations are not included in the ticket, and their price range is from 30 yen to 490 yen.
After you have finished your design, hot wax will be poured on top of the product and it takes around 20 minutes for the wax to cool down. At the end of the workshop, you'll have your own lovely candle as a souvenir from Misaki.
Your KEIKYU Misaki Maguro Pass will be valid until the end of the day, so before going back to Tokyo, you can stop at the Urari Marche for souvenir shopping, or enjoy a picnic on the green grass field of Miyagawa Park. Finding a nice restaurant in Misaki to enjoy lunch in this charming port town is also a good idea.
