teamLab has come to Shoshayama

Many people may remember the teamLab exhibition held to commemorate the renewal of Himeji City Museum of Art in 2019.

teamLab is an art collective (group of artists) that is active internationally. Pursuing a borderless world view in all dimensions, in recent years he has been working on productions based on big questions such as "What is life?" and "What is existence?"

In particular, according to the exhibition announcement, ``the shapes and brilliance of light, which should not exist physically, are created as phenomena through the effects of the environment and cognition,'' which is a work that only teamLab can express.

The venue, Shoshazan Engyoji Temple, is a place with a mix of architecture and art, which the 141st chief priest, Kenjo Oki, calls a ``sacred place for comprehensive art.'' How do we think about the questions posed by teamLab in this place with over 1,000 years of history? Let's dive into the world of light, where what you see is not everything.

The stage is Shoshazan Enkyoji restaurant.

This time, the Himeji City Museum of Art and Shoshazan Engyoji Temple have collaborated on a project that goes beyond the idea that ``works are exhibited only at art museums.'' This is one of the main projects of the "All Himeji Arts & Life Project," which will be rolled out over a four-year period starting in 2021.

Sannodo. From the right, the large auditorium, cafeteria, and Jogyodo are lined up in a U-shape.

The setting is the dining room at Shoshazan Engyoji Temple, a famous temple with a history of over 1,000 years since the Heian period. It is one of the representative landscapes of Shoshazan Engyoji Temple, ``Mitsuno-do'' (a nationally designated important cultural property), and is a student dormitory where monks in training lived.

Nowadays, you can often see the shitomido on the first floor left open (raised to the outside or inside, and fixed to a fishing bracket) as a place for visitors to copy sutras, etc. However, in this project, it is closed. I'm curious as to what's going on inside.

By the way, the sutra copying location during the event will be Jogyodo, one of the Sannodo temples. I think copying sutras while looking at the large lecture hall in front of you will give you a different feel.

Interesting exhibition contents

When we think of an exhibition, we imagine something that can be seen while walking around the venue, but for this exhibition, there is almost no walking involved. It's an exhibition that you can see with your eyes, head, heart, and another sense.

Please take off your shoes before entering the dining room. The inside of the venue is so dark that it can be scary to take a step until your eyes adjust. Please be careful of your feet and surroundings as you watch.

There are two exhibits.

teamLab “Massless Sun, Distorted Space” © teamLab

The first work you will see is ``Massless Sun, Distorted Space (2023 teamLab)''.

A white sphere inside a square frame. There appears to be an orange aura-like light reflected on the screen, but there is no screen. A sphere of light floats in the sky, changing its size. According to the laws of physics, light floats in clumps on its own, a phenomenon that would normally be unimaginable. Even if you take a photo of it, it only looks flat, but if you look at it while it is moving slowly, you will see that it is actually a sphere.

teamLab “The huge spark inside us” © teamLab

The other work is “The Giant Spark Within Us (2022 teamLab).”

At first, what only looks like a red dot begins to look like a sphere made up of countless lines as time passes. This is a strange exhibit in which the amount of time it takes for people to see something (sometimes 10 to 15 minutes) and the way they see it differs depending on the person.

Since light does not stop midway, a collection of lines of light cannot form a sphere. It is strange that something that should not exist physically exists clearly in terms of perception.

``Actually, you should be able to see from the beginning. People don't recognize everything in the world they see, they only see the world that they are aware of (in the words of teamLab representative Inoko).'' It seems that once you recognize it, you can always see it.

If you see a floating ball of light and a large red sphere, it means that the world you are aware of has expanded. In that sense, this exhibition allows you to experience a moment of recognition.

It's strange anyway. If you go to see it without knowing the information beforehand, you may not notice anything. That's because we only see the world that we are aware of. Let's open the door to a new you.

Access to Shoshazan “teamLab Engyoji Cognitive Existence”

Although you can walk up the mountain to Mt. Shosha Engyoji Temple, we recommend the Mt. Shosha Ropeway.

It takes about 4 minutes from Sanroku Station to Sanjo Station. You can enjoy air travel in a passenger car with a wide field of view.

Shosha Ropeway fare: 600 yen for adults one way, 1,000 yen for round trip (half price for elementary school students).

When entering the mountain, a deposit of 500 yen is required.

A microbus runs from Yamagami Station to Maniden (special donation of 500 yen, round trip). If you choose to walk, it is approximately 1 km one way, a distance of 15 to 25 minutes.

Niomon. The autumn leaves of Ironami are beautiful, but the fresh greenery is refreshing.

Along the way, there is an approach to the shrine with statues of the 33 Saigoku Kannon, and a Niomon gate.

It is about a 10-minute walk from Maniden to Sannodo, the venue for the event.

The bus stop is on the right of the photo, and the ropeway platform is in the back.

If you take the Shinki bus, take the ``Shosha Ropeway'' bus from Himeji Station Bus Terminal #10 and get off at the last stop (about 30 minutes), and Shosha Ropeway Sanroku Station will be right in front of you.

There is also a ``Shosha Ropeway Set Ticket,'' which includes the bus fare from Himeji Station and the Shosha Ropeway fare. Round trip fare: 1,420 yen for adults (710 yen for elementary school students). You can purchase it at the Shinki Bus Himeji Station Information Center.

For those staying overnight while sightseeing in Himeji, we recommend the Shironomachi Tour 2-Day Ticket, which includes one round-trip ticket to the Mt. Shosha Ropeway and one-time use of the Himeji Castle Loop Bus ticket. Adults: 1,600 yen (elementary school students: 800 yen). For more information, please refer to the Shinki Bus official website (https://www.shinkibus.co.jp/).
