Okinawa Weather Characteristics

With its subtropical island climate, Okinawa's weather is distinctly different from the four typical seasons in Japan. Compared to other prefectures in Japan, it has more minor temperature differences and higher humidity, remaining warm year-round.
The average temperature in Okinawa peaks in July and August. However, due to the influence of sea breezes, it rarely exceeds 35°C even in summer.
Although many people associate Okinawa with sunny weather, it has the lowest sunshine rate (days with less than 1mm of rainfall) in the country. This is due to the subtropical climate, which often results in brief rain showers. Therefore, whenever you travel to Okinawa, you should carry a folding umbrella or a light raincoat.
Additionally, Okinawa receives stronger sunlight and higher ultraviolet (UV) levels than other prefectures in Japan. Therefore, it's important to take sun protection measures seriously throughout the year!
Recommended Times for Okinawa Travel
Most people choose to visit Okinawa in summer for activities like snorkeling, which is also the busiest season.
However, we also recommend visiting in spring or autumn since the weather is more pleasant and there are fewer visitors. This makes it easier to enjoy shopping or visiting the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium comfortably.
Guide to Okinawa's Seasonal Weather
While Okinawa has fewer distinct seasons and is generally warmer than Japan's main island, the weather can change rapidly throughout the day.
When visiting Okinawa during different seasons, it's essential to be aware of specific weather points and how to dress appropriately for your activities. Below are details for each season.
Okinawa in Spring: March to May

The time from March to late April sees temperatures averaging around 20°C in Okinawa, with relatively stable weather and plenty of sunny days.
Since water temperatures rise more slowly than air temperatures, the sea remains quite cold during this time, making it less suitable for water activities. However, many coastal areas hold a blessing ceremony for the ocean, which you can arrange to attend!
You can wear short sleeves paired with long pants and a light jacket in March and April.
By May, the rainy season begins in Okinawa, with average temperatures around 25°C, allowing for full summer attire. The rainy period typically lasts until late June. In addition to bringing rain gear, it’s advisable to pack flip-flops for a quick change after getting caught in the rain.

In July and August, the weather is typically clear and dry, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. The sunlight and UV levels are strong, making sunburn easy.
This period is also the peak time for activities like snorkeling. Even in shaded areas or swimming in the water, be sure to reapply sunscreen regularly. Sunglasses and hats are also essential items to have on hand!
It’s essential to note that from July to September, Okinawa is at a peak risk for typhoons. However, this coincides with the summer vacation season, so many choose to travel to Okinawa during this time.

In September, Okinawa is still quite hot, with average temperatures around 28°C, still giving guests a solid summer feeling. After the typhoon season ends and October begins, the weather becomes more stable, with cooler temperatures and fewer days exceeding 30°C. This also signals the arrival of autumn.
In November, the average temperature in Okinawa is about 22.5°C. Days may still be slightly warm, but the overall climate is very comfortable, with significantly reduced rainfall and plenty of sunny days. This pleasant weather coincides with the off-peak tourism season, making it ideal for leisurely sightseeing.
In autumn, evening and morning temperatures in Okinawa can be cooler. It’s advisable to have a light jacket ready for these chilly moments. From mid-October onwards, you can wear thin long sleeves for warmth and sun protection.
While water temperatures still allow for water activities, it’s essential to be mindful about getting cold after exiting the water.
Okinawa in Winter: December to February

In winter, Okinawa is affected by cold northern winds, and sometimes the temperature can drop below 10°C. Although the weather is often overcast, rainfall is minimal, and snow is rare.
This is another excellent season for sightseeing from a different perspective. While swimming is not advisable, visiting indoor attractions like the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium can be a fantastic option!
Additionally, this season is suitable for whale-watching tours, offering a chance to observe the magnificent sight of whales swimming at the water's surface. This experience is highly recommended.
In December, the average temperature in Okinawa is about 19°C. While this might not seem cold, the daytime weather can be relatively mild. It’s even possible to wear short sleeves on some days.
During the coldest months of January and February, the average temperature is around 17°C, which isn’t cold enough to require a down jacket. Nevertheless, it’s still important to prepare for the chill. It’s advisable to bring a windproof jacket or coat and adopt a layered approach to dressing, allowing you to adapt to the changing weather throughout the day.

Okinawa is the earliest region in Japan for cherry blossoms to bloom, with pink winter-flowering cherries starting to blossom from late January to February.
When visiting Okinawa during cherry blossom season, you can plan to visit three famous cherry blossom spots in the northern part of the main island: Nago City, Motobu Town, and Nakijin Village.
Various events are held during the cherry blossom season. One of the most notable is the Motobu Yaedake Cherry Blossom Festival, where some viewing spots feature illuminated night cherry blossoms after sunset, creating a magical atmosphere.
Okinawa Maple Leaves
Due to the consistently higher temperatures year-round and the lack of mountainous terrain, Okinawa does not have areas where maple leaves turn red. Therefore, it isn't easy to enjoy beautiful autumn foliage.
However, if you visit Okinawa from December to mid-February, you can see the vibrant red leaves of the Ryukyu Wild Wax Tree, which offers a unique charm.
Also, northern Okinawa boasts lovely locations with cosmos flowers, which are best viewed in December. Check the article below for specific locations.
