Boarding experience report
14:00 Depart from Funakiyo Pier

When we arrived at the Funasei wharf, a 15-minute walk from Tennozu Isle Station on the monorail from Haneda Airport, a white cruiser was waiting for us. It is 18 meters long and can accommodate 20 people. It has a two-story structure with a covered deck and an observation deck, and is fully air-conditioned and heated. There are also two Western-style toilets, making the two-hour boat ride comfortable.

As soon as we boarded, we toasted with drinks

As soon as you board the boat, you'll be served drinks. Drinks include all-you-can-drink beer, wine, sake, soft drinks, and more. Enjoy some light snacks as you set sail into Tokyo Bay.
*The contents of the snacks may change depending on the season and availability.
Immediately after departure, you will be greeted by a giant mural - a fusion of Edo and modern times

A dialogue spanning nearly 200 years—Hokusai's dragon is reborn in modern-day Tennozu
As the boat begins to move, a "giant mural the size of a 13-story building" appears on the right. "OUT OF BOUNDS" (2020) , a work by New York-based artist Rei Yamaguchi , is based on Katsushika Hokusai's "Dragon Ceiling Painting of the Higashimachi Festival Float." At a staggering 40m high and 22m wide, the dynamic movement of Hokusai's dragon is brought back to life in modern-day Tennozu. A fusion of Edo-period ukiyo-e and contemporary art, this iconic sight of the cruise builds excitement.
A two-hour tour of famous spots where ukiyo-e and modern times intersect
The Edo Cruise will take you to a total of eight spots, including seven locations that were the subject of famous ukiyo-e prints and two works of modern art.
As you approach each spot, the guide app will display audio commentary and explanations of the ukiyo-e, and a dedicated guide will point out the highlights.

"Compare the scenery you are looking at now with an ukiyo-e print from the Edo period," you are prompted to do so. As you alternate between looking at the tablet and the actual scenery, you are enveloped in a mysterious sensation that transcends time and space.
What does present-day Tokyo look like from the same location as the ukiyo-e painted 200 years ago? Look forward to hearing the commentary once you're on board.

*For more information on Ukiyo-e, please see the last column.
Digital x Human Hybrid Guide

What makes this cruise unique is the combination of a digital app and a human guide. While listening to the app's commentary, you can also view images and explanations of ukiyo-e prints displayed on a tablet. The human guide will also provide real-time guidance and information. The app is available in English, so English-speaking guests can feel at ease.
16:00 Return to Funasei
The two hours fly by. After returning to port, we recommend taking a stroll along the old Tokaido road, which still retains its traditional charm.

It was a luxurious experience, using modern technology to relive the scenery that Edo painters saw. The tour will operate until the end of February 2026 (possible extension). If you're interested, we recommend making inquiries early.

[Column] What is Ukiyo-e?
Ukiyo-e are woodblock prints that were popular among common people during the Edo period (1603-1868). They depict landscapes, actors, beautiful women, and other subjects, and were like postcards of the time.
When he arrived in Europe in the 19th century, his bold compositions and vivid colors shocked Western artists. Van Gogh collected several hundred of his works, and Monet owned over 200. They were the catalyst for "Japonism," which had a major influence on the birth of Impressionism.
The ukiyo-e you see on the Edo Cruise are not just "old Japanese paintings," but art that has changed the history of art around the world . Looking at the scenery of Tokyo from that perspective will add a new level of resolution to your trip.

Tennoz Isle is an "island" surrounded by canals on all sides. Since the island was developed as an art island from the beginning, there are theaters and art halls, and the townscape has an artistic feel to it. Since its establishment, our association has set the goal of increasing awareness of Tennoz Isle and creating excitement in the run-up to the Tokyo 2020 Games, and has undertaken various initiatives such as the Tennoz Canal Fes and the Tennoz Art Festival. Our next goal is to turn Tennoz Isle into a tourist destination, and we are working on further refining the existing content. Furthermore, we are developing an art tour to sell the artworks that we have been installing as local tourism products. Creating the function of a tourist information center that receives visiting tourists. Through these initiatives, we aim to become a new urban tourist destination in Tokyo.
