Meriken Park In Kobe - Spend Time By The Sea And Learn About History
Kobe's Meriken Park, facing out on the open sea, is a wonderful sightseeing spot for visitors to the city. Here are some of the top things to enjoy there.
6. Charge Your Phone!
What do you mean, you ask? That’s right, Meriken Park has free charging spots. The metal boxes have chargers inside, so feel free to use them, but be considerate of others.
The installation was paid for by Kobe City businesses, which is why the chargers are free.
However, be aware that the boxes do not lock, so you should avoid plugging your phone in and leaving the area.
The chargers are solar-powered, making it an environmentally friendly arrangement. The installation is in the center of the park, by the Starbucks.
7. Take Photos by the Park’s Popular Spots!
The BE KOBE monument, installed in April 2017, is by the water at the park’s south edge. It is popular enough that there is often of those wanting to take photos here on the weekends. “BE KOBE” is a message created to mark the passage of two decades since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. It shows Kobe residents’ pride in their city, and their passion to use all their energy to help others.
There is no one to manage the line, but people queue up naturally anyway, so get in line. Strike up a conversation with the people in front and behind you as you wait.
The monument, including the base, is 2.4 meters tall, so climbing it is very dangerous. Avoid doing this at all costs.
8. Enjoy the Night View!
Every day at 23:30, Meriken Park, along with the rest of Kobe, lights up, further adding to the city’s beautiful night view.
The BE KOBE monument is said to light up in different colors depending on the season, or for special events like Valentine’s Day and Christmas.
At the southeastern plaza, the 230 blue LED lights embedded in the ground resemble stardust. The system stores daylight to charge up, then activates the lights at night. We heard someone say “It’s like we’re floating through the night sky!” as we walked around.
What did you think about the newly renovated Meriken Park? It’s a great spot to bring your family, go on a date, or just take a stroll.
Savor the scenery, the sound of the wind and the scent of the sea as you enjoy Meriken Park to your heart’s content.
