Karuizawa, known for its harsh winter cold, remains chilly in March, with an average temperature of just 1.1°C. There are still days with snowfall, a sign that the arrival of spring is still some time away.
The weather gradually warms up when April arrives, but it's still necessary to be prepared for the cold. The temperature difference between day and night can be significant, so carrying warm clothing is recommended.
Typically, cherry blossoms in Karuizawa bloom around mid-April. The best viewing period usually occurs from late April to early May. For many years, the cherry blossoms lasted well into Golden Week, bustling with tourists at popular hanami (flower viewing) spots.
Since March still has cold weather, it's important to wear thermal underwear and winter coats for adequate warmth. Given days of snowfall, it's also advisable to choose comfortable boots or rain boots for walking.
In April, temperatures begin to rise slightly. However, since the nights can quickly become cold, be sure to bring along a coat or a thick scarf as proper warm clothing.
During the day, the highest temperature can reach around 15°C. We recommend layering a jacket over a knit or sweater to allow for temperature regulation.

At the same time, the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza is one of the premier cherry blossom viewing spots in Karuizawa. It is located just a 3-minute walk from the South Exit of Karuizawa Station, providing easy access by train as well.
Adjacent to the Karuizawa Prince Hotel, the area features approximately 300 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino and Shidarezakura varieties. Therefore, visitors can freely enjoy hanami (flower viewing) to their heart's content. It's the perfect place to take in the beauty of spring while indulging in shopping and dining.

The Former Karuizawa Jinguji Temple is located along Old Karuizawa Ginza Street. In spring, the weeping cherry tree, estimated to be around 400 years old, beautifully blossoms on the temple grounds.
This weeping cherry tree, towering at about 15 meters, presents visitors with a stunning sight. It is said to have been loved by many literary figures, including Yasunari Kawabata, who famously wrote the novel "Snow Country" while admiring its beauty.

Karuizawa Lake Garden (*) is a vast British-style garden consisting of eight areas centered around a lake. It is especially recommended to visit in early summer. About 3,500 rose bushes bloom beautifully in June, creating a stunning floral display.

Even in August, when temperatures typically peak, it seldom exceeds 30°C. However, in recent years, due to the impact of nationwide extreme heat, the maximum temperatures have been higher than usual.
This period is also known for having the most thunderstorms of the year, with significantly increased rainfall. It's essential to carry rain gear, and it's advisable to wear comfortable shoes that are easy to walk in even if it rains.
Additionally, due to the high altitude, UV radiation will be stronger, making it crucial to take measures against heat stroke. It’s a good idea to pack an umbrella or a portable fan in your bag for convenience. Be sure to reapply sunscreen more frequently than usual as well.
During the day, it can be quite warm when the sun is shining, making short sleeves comfortable enough, even to the point of sweating slightly. However, when the sun goes behind the clouds or rain starts, it can feel chilly, so it's necessary to have a lightweight cardigan or hoodie for layering.
