Great Treats! The 7 Best Places To Enjoy Delicious Sweets In Tokyo
Looking for something sweet in Tokyo, but not sure where to find the right treat for you? In this article, we cover seven of the most popular cafes and shops where you can enjoy amazing sweets in the Tokyo area!
5. Shinjuku: Pablo
PABLO is a cheesecake specialty shop that has locations in Shinjuku, Omotesando, Akihabara, and many other places in Tokyo, as well as in Dotonbori, Abeno, and Osaka Station in Osaka. What makes this shop so special is their attention to detail and unforgettable taste, one that often has people wishing they could take these cheesecakes home with them.
PABLO's star attraction is the Just Baked Cheesecake (850 yen with tax). Measuring 15 cm in diameter, this cheesecake is heavenly; there are also many different types and sizes to choose from, which makes this a great place to take a sweet, relaxing break. 6. Akasaka: Akarimado
A recent trend in Japanese construction has seen the renovation or refurbishing of traditional warehouses and old machiya into cafes and restaurants. Not only does this help preserve some of the history of the area, but it also allows restaurateurs to use the nostalgic atmosphere of the structure itself to build on the charms of their menu.
Fans of Japanese history should not miss out on Akarimado, a cafe and restaurant in Akasaka, built in a former Taisho era (1912 - 1926) restaurant.
Their fusion menu features plenty of Japanese and Western cuisine, but when it comes to sweets, one in particular stands out: the Wa-caroon (200 yen plus tax). As the name suggests, this is a macaroon made using Japanese (Wa) ingredients.
Each type of wa-caroon is unique; some are made with anko, others Japanese citrus, and even white miso. Akarimado has one other location; a small cafe inside Shibuya MODI, in Shibuya, but if you'd like to enjoy the atmosphere of old Japan alongside your sweets, then take a look at Akarimado In Asakusa: Delicious Desserts And Romantic Taisho Charm for directions.
7. Kichijoji: Hattifnatt Picture Book Cafe
How would you like to return to your childhood? You can, when you visit the Hattifnatt Picture Book Cafe, found in ever popular Kichijoji. The outside of this cafe is painted in colorful, pop colors, while the interior on the second and loft floors is covered in picture book-like illustrations by a Japanese illustrating duo.
They have a diverse menu in this cafe, offering several light meals as well as sweets that change from day to day. One that is particularly popular is this happy dish. Their Luxury Baked Chocolate (500 yen with tax) is a dense Belgian chocolate cake with a rich, tart raspberry sauce. Why not return to your childhood innocence and get away from the rush of everyday life in a picture book world? For more information on the cafe, its artists, and other menu items, check out Kichijoji's Cute Picture Book Cafe HATTIFNATT.
While dishes like ramen and sushi are the first that come to mind when speaking of Japan's food culture, the confectionery side of Japanese cuisine is not to be missed.
